They are a great bunch of people who will as best as they can answer all of your questions. To provide the best price possible, the staff is mainly volunteers. If you come to late, I hope you have a good after party to go to :) After 22:00, the gate will be closed but we have a night guard until 03:00 on weekdays and 04:00 on weekends that will let you in. Reception hours are from 07:00-22:00, if you want to check in/out before/after hours, please contact the staff/call the hostel to make arrangements. Here you can hang out just to read a book or drink beer and play beer-pong. In the back garden we have a seating area and a bar. The kitchen is big and well equipped and has a communal fridge. Upstairs you will find a lounge area and the kitchen. In the reception are several couches and a little library. There are several bathrooms in the building, 3 downstairs and 2 upstairs. Due to the different sizes of the dorms, if you are a group, you will essentially get a private room for the price of a dorm. The biggest dorm (Guilas) has single beds, the rest have bunk beds. The Lion Fish offers private rooms as well as dormitories, where the private rooms come with and without en-suite bathroom. Please note that we have recently done a lot of renovation and improved our procedures so please come and check it out yourselves! :) We also offer free morning coffee and WIFI. We are proud to offer a hostel with a good vibe and modern feel for a very good price. ![]() The building itself has a couple of years on its back, but we have just (Oct 2017) completed refurbishing all the dorms and private rooms and also improved the communal areas. The Lion Fish Hostel is a hostel right in the middle of town, close to everything, but at the same time far enough from the noise to give you a good night sleep :) It is a relatively small hostel. This is a great place for people who want accommodation as cheap as possible. They are very friendly and helpful, even giving newcomers a tour around the hostel. Staff at The Lion Fish mainly consist of volunteers. Food is really good, including the vegetarian option. On the second floor, there is a restaurant with the same name. The fridge is unfortunately not big enough and there aren't many cups. There is no breakfast provided, but there is a great kitchen - according to Costa Rican hostel standards - where you can cook your own food. It's a very social and lively hostel, though it never gets too wild or loud to be a real party hostel. The Lion Fish really wants to create a fun environment. There are benches, chairs, and a little bar with cheap drinks. Upstairs is a big table, and outside there is a little party area provided. In the hallway are a whole bunch of lockers. These facilities are old and rundown, and relatively clean. Some of them have hot showers, while others offer only cold. There are several bathrooms in the building. The hostel also offers a room with cots, which are very cheap. So that doesn't leave many options for places to put your stuff. The floor doesn't look like it has been cleaned in a while. There is a little bedside table but it's really filthy. Pillows have a surreal shape and are incredibly thin as well. The bunk beds are single beds placed on top of each other, and there is no ladder to climb into the top bunk. The Lion Fish offers private rooms as well as dormitories. It's the perfect location! The bus terminal with buses to and from San Jos is only two minutes away. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a really tiny town and the hostel is located in the middle of the main street with the supermarkets, the bank, souvenir shops, and restaurants. ![]() It provides very cheap beds, no luxury, and lots of opportunities to get to know other travelers and party with them. The Lion Fish Hostel is a real budget backpacker's hostel.
